The Former Syrian Intelligence Center
Near the kibbutz of Merom Golan, and close to the border that marks the de facto boundaries of Israel and Syria, is the abandoned ruins of a Syrian Intelligence headquarters. Left after Israel captured the Golan in 1967, it remains a power visual of the conflict that marks the relationship of these two countries. Outside the building, there’s a memorial plaque honoring Israeli spy Eli Cohen, whose daring exploits and deep infiltration into the Syrian government allowed him to pass on vital information to Israel, paving the way for a quick and efficient conquest of the Golan Heights in the Six Day War.
