Golan Wineries
On a visit to Israel and the Golan Heights in 1972, a professor from the University of California, Davis, pronounced conditions in the Golan suitable for the cultivation of wine grapes. The Jewish pioneers of the Golan took up the challenge, clearing 250 burnt-out tanks in the Golan's Valley of Tears to plant vineyards. Now, the region has over a dozen wineries, and viticulture is one of the main industries of a thriving, developing Golan.
