Golan Legacy Sites: Gamla
Since Moses first allotted the land of the Golan to the tribe of Manassah, the Jewish people have had a history and an inheritance in the Golan Heights. Scattered across this ancient plateau are remnants of ancient towns—witnesses to Jewish life in the region. Gamla, the chief city of the Golan during the time of the Second Temple, saw itself as a vital watchman and defender, protecting the northern approach to Jerusalem from the aggressive empires that surrounded this promised land, going so far as to mint coins that read, “In defense of Jerusalem the Holy.” What can the fall of Gamla in 67 AD and subsequent fall of Jerusalem teach us, and what does it mean for the future of the Golan and Israel?
